Inset Face Frame

1 | The Boulevard Series Kitchen Cabinet

Inset face frame cabinetry is constructed so the doors are inset into the frame of the cabinet, allowing the doors to sit flush with the frame.

This type of cabinet construction gives a full view of the cabinet frame with the frames fully finished to match the doors. The finishing looks a lot like furniture rather than typical kitchen cabinets.

Overlay Face Frame

2 | The Provincial Series

Overlay face frame cabinetry is constructed so that the frames of the cabinets are still solid wood and fully finished, however the doors sit on the outside of the frame of the cabinet instead of on the inside.

Overlay face frame cabinet construction gives a full view of the cabinet frame with the frames fully finished to match the doors. This type of cabinet construction offers clients a finished furniture look, especially around appliances where you will notice thickener end gables and full 1 ¼ frames versus 5/8 or ¾ frames – which is standard for European box construction. Overlay face frame also allows us to integrate end panels and use furniture kicks if desired.

European cabinetry is constructed so the cabinet doors and drawer fronts overlay the box completely. This is a modern way of building cabinets, hence it has earned a reputation for being a more simple, sleek and contemporary choice. This kind of cabinetry comprises 90% of all our orders.

The Europeans perfected the “box” or unitized construction method, where the frameless cabinet then received the name of “Euro Style Kitchen”. Design features such as the hidden hinge, adjustable shelves, bottom mounted drawer glides are now an important part of the North American cabinet making industry. Frameless cabinets do not have a face frame so the edges are covered with edge tape. There are many edge tapes available that will match any sheet material you wish to use. Melamine and veneer tapes, with heat sensitive glue are among the many options to choose from.
